What Are Embeddings?
A fable: The Translator's Distance
A story about AI embeddings, meaning as coordinates, and why proximity is the point.
Embeddings translate text, images, audio, or other content into lists of numbers โ vectors โ so that similar meanings produce similar coordinates. When you embed the phrase loyal dog and the phrase faithful hound, they end up near each other in the vector space. When you embed car, they land far away. This is why embeddings let AI systems find related content by measuring closeness in meaning rather than matching exact words.
A fable: The translator had a gift for finding the right word. When asked whether a story felt like comfort or celebration, she could name books that held each feeling and place them in the same room. She had built a map of ideas by emotional distance. One day a traveler asked for a book about courage in hardship. She did not have that exact phrase, but she could point to the shelf where courage lived and name the neighboring shelves of related meaning. The traveler found what they needed by following the map.
The translation into numbers is done by an embedding model, which is trained to place things that appear in similar contexts close together. Once content is embedded, you can measure distance between any two items, find the nearest neighbors to a query, or cluster related content automatically.
This is the foundation of vector databases and semantic search. Instead of matching exact keywords, a system can match meaning. A question about keeping a business running through difficult times can retrieve documents about resilience, crisis management, and perseverance even if none of those exact phrases appear in the question.
Embeddings also power recommendation systems, duplicate detection, anomaly spotting, and natural language classification. Any time you want to group, rank, or compare meaning rather than exact words, embeddings are usually the right tool.
The translator's lesson is the core lesson of embeddings: meaning lives in relationship. Words are defined by the company they keep. Embeddings make that intuition computable by turning relationship into distance, and distance into a coordinate you can search.
